Let's TAlk about it

The presence of unknown variables has the potential to disturb even the most grounded among us. For teens, unwanted or unanticipated change may lead to feeling out of control and overwhelmed. We now know that excessive or chronic stress poses dangerous consequences on mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Freshmen year is just around the corner, will I make any new friends?
They just announced the new roster and wait, my name’s not on it this year . . .
We dated for an entire year and now she wants to break up. Will this pain ever subside?
How’s this finding a life purpose thing going to play out?

By fostering a responsive, rather than reactive approach to coping with change, teens and young adults can
learn how to achieve clarity while navigating the inevitable obstacles of life.

WHEN WE ASKED STUDENTS WHAT THEY WISHED THEIR PARENTS KNEW
ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH,
THIS IS WHAT THEY SAID.

"THAT IT'S A BIG DEAL TO US AND EVEN WHEN WE CAN'T SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE OF A SITUATION WE'RE GOING THROUGH WE NEED SUPPORT, NOT A LECTURE. THAT IT CAN'T ALWAYS BE FIXED RIGHT AWAY. THE STRUGGLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND TOLL IT TAKES ON PEOPLE. THAT THEY WOULD TALK TO ME ABOUT IT. ALSO THAT EVEN WHEN I'M HAVING A BAD DAY, I MAY NOT WANT TO TELL THEM EVERY LITTLE THING.

-CHASE

"THAT THEY WOULD HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED AND REALIZED IT WASN'T SOMETHING TO INGORE LIKE IT WOULD JUST GO AWAY."

-ABBY

"THAT JUST BECAUSE I STRUGGLE WITH IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I CAN'T DO ANYTHING, IT'S JUST HARD FOR ME TO DO SOME THINGS BECAUSE OF IT."

-KAMERON

The emotional, mental, and physiological symptoms of anxiety and depression can be very frightening, confusing and ,yes, overwhelming for teens.

If your student is struggling, have them speak with a ministry leader, school counselor, or a licensed therapist. A professional may be able to offer a different perspective you haven’t yet considered, or be able to give you tips and suggestions on how to encourage your teen during times of high stress or anxiety. At the very least, it’s one more person you’ll have in your student’s support circle.
