Like our physical bodies, over time our hearts can get out of shape. Distractions accumulate, priorities drift, and without intentional care, our inner lives can slowly move out of alignment.
One of the gifts of fasting is that it helps bring our spirit back into alignment with the purposes of God. It creates space to quiet the noise, re-center our desires, and return our attention to what matters most.
Fasting is an opportunity to realign your heart, your soul, and your life. It’s also a reminder to our flesh that it is not in charge—that God alone is Lord.
Jesus spoke about fasting as a normal part of spiritual life. He didn’t say if you fast, but when you fast (Matthew 6:16–18). Alongside prayer and generosity, fasting is meant to be a regular rhythm for believers.
WHAT IS FASTING?
Biblically speaking, fasting is the intentional choice to refrain from food for a spiritual purpose. While taking breaks from social media, screens, or other distractions can be healthy, fasting in Scripture is specifically tied to food.
When we fast, we push back the natural appetite and give greater attention to prayer, Scripture, and time with God. The goal is not deprivation—it’s devotion.
WHY FAST?
Fasting isn't leverage; it's alignment. Fasting isn't twisting God's arm nor is it a hunger strike in an attempt to get what we want. Fasting humbles us. It aligns us. It repositions us.
Fasting quiets distractions, brings clarity, and can help break unhealthy patterns, strongholds, or spiritual dullness.
HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?
There is no single way everyone must fast. Some may choose to fast one meal a day, fast a certain type of food, caffeine, participate in a Daniel-style fast, or take part in a complete fast. Just choose a time to fast and a type of fast that is meaningful and intentional for you. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in what kind of fast is appropriate for you, and always fast with wisdom and consideration for your health.
AN INVITATION
As a church, we would like to invite you to participate in fasting at some point this week. We want to be clear—there is no pressure or expectation, only an open invitation to seek the Lord in a way that is appropriate and meaningful for you.
“From the very first day Daniel humbled himself and sought the Lord, his prayers were heard in heaven.”
Daniel 10:12
